The first gallery we went to was The New Art Gallery in Walsall. The first exhibition I saw was Epstein's Rock Drill Transformed by War on the first couple of floors, which also contained some old artefacts from around the world, sculptures and other pieces of artwork. This exhibition didn't impress me very much and I found it quite boring and difficult to find something that really stood out to me. There were a couple of old artefacts that I liked and some of the patterns on the artefacts. I was only in there for a short time. I then went to the next couple of floors to view the Mat Collishaw exhibition which I loved. The rooms were quite dark with little lighting which made his pieces stand out more. The first room I walked into contained sculptures of plants/flowers and the largest works from his Insecticide series which were my favourite pieces of his on display. There was a room which contained video footage inside different frames of fire and a woman pole dancing in three different frames. There was a room which was one big piece with projections of people on all of the walls which were each lit up one by one using a projected light that flashed and rotated.
Mat Collishaw is fascinated by the darker side of human nature, lots of his works based on the ideas of death, destruction, and decay which are revealed as beautiful, hypnotic and compelling. He draws his inspiration from a range of sources such as media, popular culture, nature, and mythology. I mainly took close ups of his Insecticide work to look at the texture and details but I did take some normal shots of the whole work as well.
